LightWave was once the go-to app for sci-fi TV shows, but after a failed attempt to produce a modernised version, NewTek’s app lay fallow for several years. Alternatively, there's a trial version that gives you 14 days to try Cinema 4D out for free and a free education version for students and teachers. Perpetual licenses aren't cheap, but you can always start with Prime and upgrade over time. There's also volumetric modelling, which is perfect if you don't have the time or skillset to create smooth solid forms. It’s a professional, complex piece of software, largely recognised for its overall stability and for being the 3D modelling software with the easiest learning curve.Ĭinema 4D boasts a vivid community of creatives with a huge online library of tutorials – not to mention the training site Cineversity, to which you get free membership when you buy the app or pay for the annual Maxon service agreement (MSA). Cinema 4D’s parametric modelling toolset is generally very good, and you can increase its functionality with a range of reasonably priced plugins. When I used other apps I felt I needed to use other apps like xnormal and topogun more.Maxon’s Cinema 4D has been around for a long time and is highly regarded in the worlds of motion graphics, visualisation and illustration. The only other tool I feel I need is Zbrush for sculpting. The visual programming style to Schematics are pretty neat.Īll in all modo feels a little more complete than other 3d packages. I like the animation and rigging workflow.

I like the various game art related features such as retopo, baking, and simple to use normal editing. I like the way that modo splits up workflows modes in to separate tabs so the UI doesn't get too cluttered. It's just a case of what you prefer or what your job requires. I haven't used C4D before, but given it's popularity across the industry I suspect it's just as good as all the other popular apps. Any significant changes could potentially leave people unwilling to upgrade. They can't change their UI and workflow much between versions because they have users who have been using it since the 90s.

While apps like 3ds max are just as capable as modo. While being new enough to have learned from the mistakes of other packages when it comes to workflow design. It's at the sweet spot between being old enough to have all of the features 3d artist needs from their application.
